WALTER Climate Component
Fire
behavior is strongly influenced by climatic factors. For
example, the amount of snow and/or rain that falls in the
winter preceeding the fire season has a significant impact
on how wet fuels are during the fire season. The frequency
of lightning strikes is also important. Research on the relationship
between climate patterns and fuel moisture provides ways
to use information about climate history and patterns to
anticipate where fire hazard and fire severity are likely
to be most acute.
