Climate Aspects of Fire Risk

Climate strongly influences fire risk, for instance by affecting the nature of the fuels that burn in wildfires. FSC-1, the model being developed by this project, takes these two climate-related factors into account:

  1. Fuel Moisture Stress Index - how wet the burnable material is, hence how easily it will ignite and how fast and hot it will burn
  2. Lightning Ignition Probability - the likelyhood of a lightning strike causing a fire
