Santa Catalina & Rincon Mountain Complex Study Area
The
Catalina and Rincon Mountains are located in southern Arizona,
about 75 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Elevations
range from about 2,500 feet in the Tucson basin to 9,157
feet at the summit of Mt. Lemmon in the Catalina Mountains
and 8,600 feet at the top of Rincon Peak in the Rincon Mountains.
Tucson is a city of 486,699 residents (2000 Census). In
addition to the City of Tucson, the study area includes the
communities of Oro Valley, Oracle, Catalina, and Vail. The
total population of all communities in the study area is
approximately 576,000. The establishment of units of Coronado National
Forest in the surrounding mountains, and designation of Bureau
of Land Management units in the lower elevations presented
a barrier to rampant development of lands outside the city,
while at the same time facilitating the use of the natural
resource base which largely consisted of timber and livestock
forage.
