WALTER Case Study Areas

Phase 1 of the Fire-Climate-Society Strategic Model (FCS-1) will produce fire risk maps for four specific areas:

Catalina-Rincon Mountains, adjacent to Tucson, Arizona
Huachuca Mountains, located in the vicinity of Fort Huachuca Army Base and the nearby city of Sierra Vista, Arizona
Chiricahua Mountains, located in a still largely rural area of southeastern Arizona
Jemez Mountains, adjacent to Los Alamos National Laboratory and the community of Los Alamos, New Mexico

Study Site Selection Criteria for WALTER
The WALTER team selected study areas which could capture differences in southwestern forest ecology, climate, human influences, and wildland management challenges. One or more of the investigators have carried out specific research in each of these areas previously, and thus have an important foundation of knowledge and information upon which to draw. In addition, each site offers good opportunities for integrating community members into the process of developing and implementing the FCS-1 Model.
