Personal Landscape Value

In order to assess human values placed on the landscape, maps of perceived landscape values were created for this project by map-based, in-person interviews of approximately 30 people in each of the venues to determine what areas they perceive as being the most at risk to wildfire. A variety of base maps were used during the interviews, including:

  • USGS
  • ESRI
  • Arizona NBII
  • NPS
  • AZ GAP (land ownership)

For further discussion of the process of developing the maps from personal interviews, see: Interview Methodology.

Ecological Effects of Fire Fighting Foams and Retardants
by Robyn Adams and Dianne Simmons
This paper, presented at the Australian Bushfire Conference, Albury, July 1999, looks at the environmental effects of fire retardant use on the ecosystem, particularly in areas of high wilderness value or high landscape value, with the conclusion that their use should be avoided, "however foams may be the most appropriate and least damaging tool for bushfire suppression where the ecological costs of traditional suppression methods are high."
