Vegetation Greenness Animation (NDVI)

AVHRR Tool (1989-2004)   ·   MODIS Tool (2000-2004)

What it is:

These tools, hosted on the RangeView web site, show bi-weekly greenness measures (NDVI) or greenness differences from normal for 1989 to 2004. The AVHRR tool creates custom animations for any area in the contiguous U.S., Southern Canada, and Northern Mexico; the spatial extent available in the MODIS tool is limited to the contiguous U.S. An animation can be created to compare any two years and image types.

Potential Uses:

The tool can be used to view the vegetation greenness from past years in order to see what greenness conditions were like under certain weather, fire or other conditions.

Suggested Demo:

Scenarios for Use:

Tools Science
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
The NDVI is an index that provides a standardized method of comparing vegetation greenness between satellite images. The formula to calculate NDVI is:
NDVI = (near IR band - red band) / (near IR band + red band)

Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)
The AVHRR sensor was first launched in 1978 on the TIROS-N satellite, one of NOAA's Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POESs). This means that the sensor has global coverage.
